Who doesn’t like free food? Chipotle wants to find out, as the burrito chain is going to hand out free food and drinks throughout the month of September. Click to find out all the tasty details – and be sure to bring an appetite!
Forget Cinco De Mayo, because Chipotle is bringing the party to September, according to CNBC. The chain thinks burritos are the perfect fall meal and will be giving out free food during the month! According to this new promotion, on every Sunday in September, customers can get a free kid’s meal with the purchase of an entrée. Sweet.
That’s not all. On Mondays, high school and college students (with a valid ID) can get a free soft drink or iced tea with any in-store entrée purchase. Need to take a study break with a burrito bowl? Flash your student ID and enjoy a drink with your meal. Score! Don’t forget the guac.
These two promotions are on top of the chain’s limited-time Chiptopia loyalty program, which gives free entrees (aka burritos, burrito bowls, etc.) after a certain number of purchases. For mom and dad looking to treat their kids or for the college student who has to eat on a budget, this is a great deal!
“It’s back to school time and students — particularly high school and college students — have always been such loyal customers,” a Chipotle spokesperson told CNBC, “so we thought a promotion directed specifically to them would be a great way to help them ring in a new school year.”
These freebies aren’t just a way for Chipotle to be nice. The company is trying to win back customers following its infamous food poisoning scandals. People who ate the food were infected with the norovirus, E.Coli, or salmonella. The crisis actually forced chains across the country to close down and hold a global meeting about proper food preparation.
Despite these changes, Chipotle sales are still down. They lost 30 percent of same-store stales in the first quarter. The company made a profit in the second quarter, but same-store sales continued to decline, sinking down 26.5 percent. Will free food drum up sales or have people ditched the burrito for a salad from Chop’d?
