Selena Gomez shocked us all when she announced that she would be taking a break from her ‘Revival Tour’ after suffering from anxiety and depression brought on by lupus. A top rheumatologist told HollywoodLife.com why the singer is making a good decision. Here’s the EXCLUSIVE scoop!
On Aug 30, Selena Gomez, 24, bravely revealed that she would be postponing her Revival World Tour due to her health. “I can see Selena Gomez’s lupus becoming more active from the stress and strain of a performing tour,”Dr. Swamy Venuturupalli, M.D., F.A.C.R., Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology & Co-Chariman of the Advisory Committee of Lupus L.A. tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.
“Lupus triggers include infections, stress, lack of sleep, trauma, sun exposure and environmental factors.” Dr. Venuturupalli explained that depression, panic attacks, anxiety, headaches, difficulty focusing and memory problems can be manifestations of lupus. Poor Selly!
So what can Selena do to take care of herself? “The best way to treat these manifestations of anxiety, panic attacks and depression is to take the stressors out of the picture,” says Dr. Venuturupalli who has not treated the singer. “They can also be treated with various medications, cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise. Exercise is very important and yoga can help reduce stress as well.” Thankfully Selena is putting her health first!
Depending on Selena’s medical condition and how serious it it, she may need to take off one or two months, says Dr. Venuturupalli who praised the singer for coming forward. “I applaud Selena Gomez for speaking up about lupus and making it a more comfortable topic to discuss and learn about.”
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported Selena opened up about her illness in a courageous statement. “As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways”, the beauty told PEOPLE. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges. I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.” How brave!
