Ryan Lochte is putting his robbery controversy in the past by moving on to ‘Dancing With The Stars,’ but not without recognizing the big ‘mistake’ he made in Rio. The swim star even declared himself a liar! See what he said right here!
As Ryan discussed what happened in Rio in an interview with Good Morning America on Aug. 30, the 32-year-old swimmer declared that the whole situation has been blown “way out of proportion.” But as much as he hopes being a contestant on Dancing With The Stars will help the world (and himself) move past the robbery, Ryan admitted his “mistake”once more — which he probably hopes would be the last time doing so.
“I did lie about that one part,” Lochte told GMA about his claim that he had a gun held to his head on that fateful night. “I take full responsibility. I’m human. I made a mistake. A very big mistake.”
This isn’t the first time Ryan has owned up to his actions, as he issued a statement about the situation on Aug. 19 apologizing for “not being more candid” about how he explained what happened to him and his teammates Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen, and Gunnar Bentz in Rio on Aug. 13. After the swimmers initially claimed that they were “robbed” at a gas station after a night out, Ryan’s telling of the story seemed to have several different variations. Ryan has taken “full responsibility” for his actions and revealed that his story was “exaggerated,” but this is seemingly the first time he’s actually used the word “lie” when detailing the situation. Now that he’s fully come clean, he’s ready to move on by dancing!
Although Ryan has a new gig in his post-Rio days, his legacy has unfortunately already been tainted by what happened in Rio. His behavior lost Ryan his Speedo endorsement, reportedly along with his deals with Ralph Lauren, Gentle Hair Removal, and Airweave. Amidst losing all of the sponsorships, Ryan did pick up an endorsement deal with Pine Bros. Softish Throat Drops, so there are still companies that believe in Ryan after his lying scandal!
DWTS apparently believes in him too, as it was officially confirmed that Ryan will be dancing in Season 23 with partner Cheryl Burke. HollywoodLife.com was hearing EXCLUSIVELY that Ryan may struggle to find a partner because of the threat that he may get voted off early after his behavior in Rio, but clearly Cheryl is also on Team Ryan! Maybe she admires that he owned up to his lie and “big mistake”? Regardless, we’ll certainly be watching to see if Ryan can redeem himself!
