There were plenty of amazing performers at the 2016 MTV VMAs, but it was the pop queens who prevailed on Aug. 28. Rihanna, Beyonce, and Britney Spears all delivered flawless performances — but who was the best? Vote for favorite right here!
All three performances had some sort of significance: Rihanna was celebrating the Video Vanguard Award she received at the end of the night, Beyonce performed nearly her entire Lemonade album, and Britney gave her first VMAs performance in nine years. Just that alone makes it tough to decide which one gave the most memorable show! So let’s relive these epic performances and figure out which one really was superior, shall we?
Rihanna kicked off the VMAs with her first of four — yes, FOUR — performances, singing a medley of her hits “Please Don’t Stop The Music,” “Only Girl (In The World),” and “We Found Love.” Sure, that was a pretty insane way to open up the show, but Rihanna managed to top her opening number with more medleys throughout the night, including a mashup of “Work,” “Rude Boy,” and “What’s My Name” and later a performance of “Needed Me,” “Pour It Up,” and “B***h Better Have My Money.”
RiRi blew us away with her voice and unbelievable stage presence, but it was her show-closing performance of “Stay,” “Diamonds,” and “Love On The Brain” that showed the Rihanna chops we all know and love. She certainly proved that she deserved that Vanguard Award (and an ADORABLE introduction speech from Drake)!
But then there was Beyonce. Although it was technically Rihanna’s night, Beyonce stole the spotlight for nearly 16 minutes while delivering several tracks from Lemonade and there was really only one word to describe it: Mind-blowing. Beyonce practically put on a whole concert during her performance, singing “Pray You Catch Me,” “Hold Up,” “Sorry,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” and “Formation” — and there was never a dull moment. She brought the classic Bey fierceness that resulted in one heck of a show, from the insane dance moves to the on-point vocals. It was definitely a VMAs moment for the books!
Britney didn’t get nearly as much performance time as her fellow pop divas, but that doesn’t downgrade what she did on stage. She had a lot to prove since the last time she took the VMA stage was for her 2007 flop of “Gimme More,” and she made one heck of a comeback! Singing “Make Me” with the help of rapping collaborator G-Eazy, Britney reminded us all why she’s one of the VMAs most iconic artists.
On top of the powerhouse performances Rihanna, Beyonce, and Britney gave, they all looked phenomenal as they took the VMA stage. Perhaps the best part was the fact that each singer stayed true to their own styles both in fashion and performing, and for that we think they all deserve kudos! Clearly we can’t decide, so you tell us who deserves to be crowned the 2016 VMAs queen!
