Welcome to the VMAs, Rihanna! The Video Vanguard winner opened up the awards show in NYC on August 28 with a stunning medley of some of her most beloved hits. If her performance was any indication, tonight’s going to be a party!
Rihanna, 28, blew up the MTV Video Music Awards opening by making all our dreams come true. No introduction, no noise was necessary; it was just Rihanna strolling out onstage with her dancers to tear it up to only the best of the best: “Please Don’t Stop the Music”, “Only Girl”, and “We Found Love”. The dancing, the singing — it was all incredible as Rihanna rocked the stage in a cute little romper. The best part, though, was seeing how stoked Rihanna was to be there!
And that’s why Rihanna was awarded the Video Vanguard! When Rihanna’s award and performance were announced, the MTV Video Music Awards executive producer said that she’d be blowing the roof off the house: “It’s going to be one of those holy crap VMA moments. She’s not playing. She’s bringing it.” Truth!

Rihanna was selected as the winner of the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2016 VMAs, an honor that’s bestowed upon only the most influential and brightest artists in the music industry. Past recipients include: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Guns N’ Roses, the Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Kanye West. And now Ri Ri joins their ranks!
It’s hard to believe that Rihanna’s been around for over a decade, but what a crazy decade it’s been. Since her debut with “Umbrella”, Rihanna has received two “Video of the Year” VMAs, and became the youngest solo artist to score 14 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. She’s incredible.
There really was nobody more excited to see Rihanna win the award than her rumored on-again boyfriend, Drake. The rapper’s so proud of Rihanna that he bought her a billboard in Hollywood to commemorate the big win! Seriously! The black billboard simply said in white cursive, “Congratulations to Rihanna from Drake and Everyone at OVO.”
That sure beats flowers or a greeting card, doesn’t it? Rihanna definitely noticed the gesture, and posted a pic of the billboard on Instagram with the caption “When he extra ❤🏆!!!” How’s he going to congratulate her after this epic night’s over?
