This is so touching. The mothers of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Oscar Grant were invited to the 2016 MTV Music Video Awards by Beyonce and their appearance at the award show was absolutely beautiful. Get the scoop here.
We were so amazed to see the mothers of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Oscar Grant join together at the VMAs on Aug. 28. Lesley McSpadden, Sybrina Fulton, Gwen Carr and Wanda Johnson looked absolutely gorgeous in their designer duds as they appeared in New York City as part of Beyonce‘s entourage, according to Billboard. The four ladies recently appeared in the singer’s visual album, where they each held up photos of their sons.
As you’ll recall, all of their African American sons were killed in race-related shootings. Mike, Eric and Oscar were shot and killed by police. Trayvon was killed in 2012 by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator who got into an altercation with the unarmed 17-year-old, and claimed to be acting in self defense when he shot Trayvon to death. In 2013, George was acquitted of second-degree murder.
All four of the controversial deaths received a serious amount of media coverage and brought race-related shootings to the front of the public conversation. The appearance of these strong women, who lost their sons too soon, at the VMAs tonight helps to support the fight to end discrimination in this country. We are so touched by the fact that Beyonce included them in not just her visual album, but in this night that is so special to her. And we’re sure it is a night they will always remember.
