Michael Phelps was only suspended for six months by the U.S. Olympic Committee for his DUI in 2014…and Ryan Lochte is hoping that’s a good omen for the punishment he’ll get for lying about being robbed in Rio. If his teammate was barely reprimanded, he won’t be either, right?
The United States Olympic Committee has promised that further action against Ryan Lochte, 32, will come after he lied about being held at gunpoint and robbed in Rio. The exact details regarding his punishment have not been revealed yet, but the swimmer isn’t too worried about what he’s facing, sources close to the situation tell TMZ.
The reason for his lackadaisical attitude about this is because he saw the weak punishment his teammate, Michael Phelps, 31, was given in 2014 for being arrested for DUI — and he could’ve seriously hurt or even killed someone with his transgression!
Michael was able to keep all his medals and had no restrictions from competing in the 2016 Olympics. Instead, he was just suspended for six months, and Ryan views his own trouble as far less dangerous compared to the 31-year-old’s, the site reports.
Ryan has apologized for exaggerating his story about what went down at the gas station in Rio. While he and his teammates originally claimed that they were driven off the road and robbed at gunpoint, the actual story is much different, and involved them first damaging a bathroom at the rest stop. Then, yes, a security guard did point a gun at them, which Ryan says was “BS,” but the guard claims it was only because he was trying to control one of the “angry” swimmers.
The four swimmers involved in this scandal are expecting not to get a punishment any worse than Michael’s six-month suspension, according to TMZ, and feel that if they do, it’s just to “appease the media and the public.”
HollywoodLifers, what do you think Ryan’s punishment will be? Do you think it should be lesser than Michael’s?
