Michelle Obama broke the Internet when she made her Carpool Karaoke debut in July, and our sister publication ‘Variety’ got the FLOTUS to spill all about her experience in their Aug. 23 issue. Find out why she decided to participate in James Corden’s viral segment!
Michelle Obama, 52, was more than thrilled to go on CBS’ Late Late Show for Carpool Karaoke, and she tells Variety that it was one of her favorite experiences. “First of all, I was riding in a car with somebody else, without the Secret Service,” she said gleefully. “So right there, [I said], ‘Let’s keep driving!’ I think we drove around the South Lawn about 100 times.” Amazing!
So what’s the number one reason Michelle filmed the segment? Well, making appearances outside of traditional news settings is vital due to “the power of pop culture”, and it can be used to get other, more meaningful points across. “It was a part of a carefully planned strategy executed by the first lady to leverage the power of Hollywood to advocate for issues near and dear to her heart,” the magazine wrote. Indeed, her segment focused on Let Girls Learn, one of Michelle’s biggest initiatives to promote access to education for girls.
“[Michelle] calls herself ‘a product of pop culture.’ She is convinced of its influence on the public consciousness — in her case to build awareness of her signature policy initiatives, specifically ones tied to healthy eating and exercise, girls’ education, support for military families, and college advancement,” the article also explained.
That doesn’t mean the FLOTUS didn’t have fun with it, though. “What I have never been afraid of is to be a little silly, and you can engage people that way,” Michelle added. Too true, and we love her more for it.
