Chaos and mayhem was unleashed on Taiwan — all because of a Snorlax. A stampede of Pokemon GO players caused a traffic nightmare as they rushed to catch the rare monster. Click to watch this crazy scene.
Snorlax famously blocked the road in the first Pokemon game, but this time, it was Pokemon GO trainers who brought traffic to a standstill in the Taiwanese city of Taipei on Aug. 21, per Uproxx. A Snorlax, the game’s most popular non-evolved character, was spotted and a mob of players rushed to catch it.
Wow. But, it’s a Snorlax. Pokemon Go trainers would understand the urgency, as the monster is very rare. While the sight of hundreds of people blatantly ignoring traffic safety law might seem mind-boggling to some, it turns out that this is an everyday occurrence in Taiwan.
“This place is insane,” a Reddit user, who lives in Taiwan, claimed. “Due to it being such a great spot for POGO, traffic is at a standstill and people can’t sleep at night because a Dragonite spawned in their tiny street, and thousands of people try to cram into it. If you’ve ever been to Taiwan, you know how tiny these side streets are.” Well, to be fair, it was a Dragonite.
A similar stampede happened in New York City on July 17. Instead of a Snorlax, a Vaporeon appeared in Central Park in the middle of the night! Hundreds of New Yorkers swarmed the park, hoping to snag them the powerful Pokemon. It seems “Poke-madness” is not just reserved for one country.
Running blindly into traffic is one of the many dangers of playing Pokemon GO. Armed thieves have used the game to plan ambushes, robbing players who didn’t know they were walking into a trap. Sadly, some Pokemon players have lost their lives during the game. Calvin Riley, 20, was shot out on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf while playing and another player was reportedly fatally shot after breaking into a home to catch a Pokemon! Fingers crossed that no one gets trampled the next time Snorlax shows up again.
Would you join the crowd and go chase after a Snorlax, HollywoodLifers? Or do you think people went a little too crazy over that Pokemon?
