“Exciting news! If you are not aware, we have confirmed that Lun Lun is expecting, and birthwatch officially begins Monday, August 22,” the zoo explained on Aug. 19. “During this time the keepers and vet staff are preparing the building with incubators, blankets, and humidifiers in order to ensure the health and stability of the cub when it is born. We are so excited and will continue to keep you updated. Stay tuned!” We just can’t wait!
It’s notoriously difficult to inseminate pandas and for them to give birth and then to keep the babies alive in captivity. Only four zoos in America can boast having a panda, and Atlanta is one of them. Luckily, they have also had a lot of success with raising panda cubs. Three years ago, Lun Lun gave birth to two baby girls, Mei Lun and Mei Huan. It’s always a huge success when healthy pandas are raised because they are so horrifyingly endangered. As a matter of fact, only an estimated 1,600 pandas still live in the wild. We wish Lun Lun so much luck with her new baby!
