Grace VanderWaal is the talk of this season’s ‘America’s Got Talent,’ but she almost didn’t even audition for the show. Originally, the plan was for the 12-year-old to audition for ‘American Idol,’ but she was forced to change her mind, she explains in a new interview. Get the scoop here!
If American Idol didn’t have an age restriction, chances are, Grace VanderWaal, 12, would’ve auditioned for that reality singing competition, rather than America’s Got Talent!
“It’s always been a dream to audition for American Idol,” she tells Teen Vogue. “But you have to be 15 or older. And, as you may know, this [was] the last season. And so we always say that when I was 15, I was going to audition for American Idol, and then one day my mom just called me downstairs and she had her laptop out and was like, ‘I signed you up for America’s Got Talent.’ Just like that. And then the next weekend I auditioned.”
From there, the rest was history. Grace performed her original song, “I Don’t Know My Name,’ during her audition, and impressed Simon Cowell so much, he used his golden buzzer on her. That meant she automatically sailed through to the live shows, and she’ll be performing again on television Aug. 23.
After her incredible audition, Simon even told Grace that he thought she could be the “next Taylor Swift,” but when we caught up with her, she had quite a surprising reaction, admitting she doesn’t really listen to Tay that much these days. “I want to be unique and my own person,” she told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.
Regardless of the kind of artist she wants to be, fans are totally obsessing over Grace — and she even released a brand new original song last week. This girl can’t be stopped!
