1. He’s Norwegian, but has ties to Brazil.

Born Kyrre Gorvell-Dahll, Kygo combined the first two letters from his first and last names into Kygo. The DJ’s parents are both from Norway, but due to his dad’s constant traveling for work, Kygo was actually born in Singapore, and has lived all over the world, including Egypt, Japan, Kenya, AND Brazil.

2. He’s a huge sports fanatic.

Spinning at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics was a dream come true for Kygo because of his love for sports, especially soccer. If Kygo had to choose another profession besides DJing, it would be to play soccer professionally. Sports occupied the majority of his free time until his passion for music developed in middle school.

3. He was in the military!

In Norway, it’s mandatory to complete one year of military service. Kygo, who was always shy and studious in school, boldly decided to enroll as a fireman at a naval base. That’s right, before he was a DJ, Kygo was a fireman! “It was fun,” he told iHeartRadio. “I had a lot of time off, so it’s kind of like, if I didn’t have music, it would’ve been a boring year.”

4. He supports LGBTQ rights and does charity work.

Kygo is winning SERIOUS points in our books right now. This past June, Kygo donated $50,000 from his concert’s profits to Frank Mugisha, a Ugandan LGBTQ advocate seeking to create more opportunity for the community across Uganda. “Everyone should be permitted to live with one’s sexual orientation,” he explained to NRK. “That is not the situation in Uganda and quite a few other countries across the world.”

5. He has both EDM and hip-hop idols.

He’s best known for his smooth electronic beats, but Kygo still knows how to appreciate other music genres and talented singers. His favorite artists include Avicii, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, and Coldplay. Kygo hopes to collaborate with more R&B artists in the future.
