No one has been able to stop the Americans. They opened up Rio by squashing Senegal, 121-56. They followed it by trouncing Spain in group play, 103-63. The US Women then smoked Serbia, 110-84, crushed Canada, 81-51, and annihilated China, 105-62. They sent Japan packing with a score of 110-64 in the quarterfinals and bounced France back home in the Semis, 86-67.
With such an unstoppable display (and already scoring a victory over Spain) it’s no wonder that the US women are the favorites to win their sixth consecutive gold medal. Yet, after the struggled to get past France with Sue Bird, 35, sitting on the sidelines with an injury, coach Geno Auriemma, 62, realizes that the gold medal match will be tough.
“[O]ur players really found out today that without Sue it’s certainly not going to be like that,” he said, per ABC News. “There’s a big difference in our team the way we played today and the way we played the other six games.”
While Geno is cautious, star player Diana Taurasi, 34, isn’t worried. “It’s going to be the same old dance,” she said. “They have world class players. … This is going to be a great game between great teams and great players alike.”
It’s going to be one heck of a game, that’s for sure. HollywoodLifers – who do you want to win this game? Team USA Or Team Spain?
