Slam dunk! After an epic women’s basketball match between Spain and the USA on Aug. 20, it was Team USA who walked away with the gold.
What an incredible way to end the women’s Olympic basketball tournament! When the final buzzer rang out at Rio 2016, it was US taking home the top prize, giving Spain silver; Serbia won Bronze. The final score was 101 to 72.
Going into this game, Team USA looked impossible to beat. Not only were they undefeated in the Rio 2016 tournament, but they were also on a 48-Olympic-game winning streak! Having won the gold for the past five Olympics (from 1996 to 2012). Even Spain’s players knew that this game would be a huge challenge.
“It is impossible to beat them,” Spain forward Laura Nicholls, 27, said ahead of the game, per Reuters. Though, she didn’t give up hope that she and her squad could pull off the upset, but acknowledged that “it [would] be very, very complicated.” Spain was no slouch during the tournament. While they weren’t perfect like the USA, they put away opponents like Serbia, Senegal and Turkey.
Even though the US Women defeated Spain earlier in the tournament (during the first round group stage) they weren’t going to sleep on their opponents. “People might say ‘Oh, they just played Spain and beat them by 40 points,'” Angel McCoughtry, 29, an American power forward, said ahead of the game. “We’ve got to be serious and really get this because it’s going to be a different game.”
It may have been a different game but it ended with the same results. Congratulations to USA on nailing nothing but net in their pursuit of Rio 2016 gold!
