This is heartbreaking. In a shocking new video, Baylor football player Ishmael Zamora can be seen abusing his dog with a belt after it goes to the bathroom inside the house. Will his actions affect his career? Watch the graphic clip and get the details, here.
In the unsettling Snapchat video obtained by News Channel 25, Ishmael Zamora, the wide receiver for the Baylor Bears, aggressively kicks his dog, then beats it multiple times with a belt. Even more tragic is the fact that viewers can see the dog whimpering in the corner as it tries to escape his fury. So sad. The player continues to curse and yell at his dog, clearly trying to teach him a lesson for his bad behavior. Ishmael later explained his actions, saying that he wasn’t trying to actually harm his pet, “I lost my temper trying to discipline him. I’ve been through training with a dog trainer to help me learn new potty training tips.” Yeah, bet use of a belt wasn’t one of the tips.
Upon seeing the graphic clip, a former Baylor student, Shelby Ball, quickly told authorities about the incident which occurred in July. She said, “Dogs can’t speak for themselves… I felt like something needed to be done.” She reportedly told Animal Control and the Police Department within two hours, since she didn’t feel like the punishment fit the crime. “I can’t imagine anybody who loves their dog and treats their dog well, hitting their dog against the face because they had an accident in the house.” Ishmael was ultimately charged with a Class C misdemeanor and given a $500 citation. He reportedly sent the dog to live with his relatives in Houston.
So how did this incident effect Ishamel’s football career? The school’s athletic department did see the video and said Ishmael will face punishment. Baylor Baylor football coach Jim Grobe told the Waco Tribune-Herald that the prized wide receiver will still practice with the team, but his sophomore playing status will be “affected.” The coach explained, “We’re not going to tolerate it. He’s going to be disciplined by a bunch of people.” Jim continued, “The city is going to get a piece of him, and the university doesn’t take it lightly. Hopefully, it’s a teaching moment and a learning experience for him.” Rightfully so.
