What a race! As expected, Usain Bolt took home the gold in a blink of the eye, beating everyone else in the 200m race on Aug. 18. The Jamaican sprinter continues to be the fastest man on the planet and this dash sure proved why!
It was one of the fastest – and most anticipated – race in all of Rio 2016. Fans wanted to see if Usain Bolt, 29, could pull off a three-peat, winning the gold for the third straight Olympics at the 200m. Canadian Andre DeGrasse, 21, took home the silver, but there was no stopping the Lightning Bolt in what he has always said is his favorite race! Not even a rainstorm that started right before the event could stop him from getting his eighth gold medal!
Usain was given a leg up on the competition when his biggest competitor, Justin Gatlin, 34, failed to qualify for the final. He only finished third in his semi-final, while Usain posted the fasted time of the season, running 200-meters in 19.78 seconds. Justin was the man who almost beat Usain at the 100m, but the World’s Fastest Man was able to hold off his rival for the gold.
With Justin failing to qualify, that left America’s LaShawn Merrit, 30, Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev, 26, Adam Gemili, 22, of Great Britain, Alonso Edward, 26, of Panama, France’s Christophe Lemaitre, 26, and the Netherlands’ Churandy Martina, 32, to challenge Bolt for the gold.
However, Usain thought he was his own biggest opponent, as he thought that he could break his world record of 19.19, especially since he was placed in lane 6. “If I get a lower lane, it’s always harder for me to run the corner when it’s tighter,” he told reporters ahead of the race.
Now that this race is over, Usain will try to end his trip in Rio on a high note. He’ll run in the 4x100m relay event on Aug. 19 with the Jamaican team. Will Usain add one more gold medal to his ever growing collection?
What do you think about the race, HollywoodLifers? Are you amazed by Usain’s performance?
