Tough loss. The U.S. Women’s volleyball team was beat in an huge upset during the semifinals by a score of 15-13 in the fifth set to Serbia on Aug. 18th in Rio. Keep reading for all the details on this heart-breaking loss.
So disappointing. The United States women’s volleyball team lost a difficult game to the women of Serbia after 5 long sets. This comes on the heels of the women’s beach volleyball also losing key semifinal matches and settling for bronze. Both American teams had the pressure of high expectations and dreams of gold, only to be dashed by the challenging international field.
The women’s volleyball team had momentum heading into this match having crushed Japan in straight sets during preliminary rounds. The American team was expected to win their semifinal round as well setting up game a likely final with host country Brazil. Instead Team USA will be battling it out for a bronze as did their beach counterparts. Decorated gold Olympian Kerri Walsh Jennings and her American teammate April Ross came from behind to capture bronze on the sand in beach volleyball against the Brazilians.
Christa Dietzen, captain of the American indoor team, had no answer for the hungry Serbian squad. The Americans had solid effort from their 6’4″ wing spiker Kimberly Hill, one of the tallest U.S. players, but ultimately they fell short after a difficult fifth set which saw several lead changes.
