This is so devastating. The world is still in awe, after an image of a young boy who survived an airstrike in Syria went viral on Aug. 17. See the shocking pic here.
Warning: this is a bit graphic. In the tragic image seen above, a 5-year-old boy, who has now been identified as Omran Daqneesh, was captured sitting alone in an ambulance. The boy had reportedly just survived a deadly airstrike that hit his hometown of Aleppo, according to the Daily Mail. The little boy is covered in dust from the rubble and blood, and his eyes seem to be badly injured or damaged.
Omran and four other children were reportedly taken to the hospital where they were treated for their injuries. Omran was treated for a head wound, which he experienced after his home in the suburbs of Aleppo was hit, according to ABC. After treating his injuries, Omran was discharged from the Syrian American Medical Society hospital, but the whereabouts of his parents are still unknown.
Since the image first hit the Internet, many have expressed their shock and disappointment with the violence in Syria that has now affected the country’s youth. “I’ll never forget the image of that poor, stunned Syrian boy in the ambulance…nor the BILLIONS we spend on Olympic sports,” one person said on Twitter. “My heart is broken. Looking at the little Syrian boy’s traumatised stare at the chaos, how do we end their torture? When does it stop,” another added.

The image of Omran is another sad picture that sums up the turmoil and horror of the war in Syria. At least 25 civilians in Aleppo were killed according to the Daily Mail. And even more were rushed to the hospital, following injuries endured from a rocket blasting into many buildings in the suburb. Aleppo is one of the major battlegrounds of Syria’s tragic civil war. The city is split between western areas held by the government and eastern regions held by rebels, according to ABC. Since July 2016, the war has intensified, which has raised questions of safety for more than 1 million civilians who still live in the city.
Our hearts go out to Omran, and hope he will be reunited with his family soon.
