Will Ashton Eaton be able to bring home the decathlon gold for the USA once again? The track & field star is looking to defend his title in Rio on Aug. 17 in one of the Olympics’ most exhausting events. Find out more about Ashton right here as he goes for the gold!
1. He’s the current world record holder for the decathlon.
Ashton scored a whopping 9,045 points at the 2015 IAAF World Championships, becoming the second person in decathlon history to score more than 9,000 points. He bested Czech Republic’s Roman Šebrle’s 2001 record score of 9,026 by almost 20 points!
2. He qualified for the Rio Olympics while he was injured.
Despite having an injured quad, a tight right hamstring, and a tweaked right ankle, Ashton managed to take first place in the U.S. Olympic decathlon trials in July. He was even a full 325 points ahead of the second place finisher!
3. If he wins another gold, he’ll be the first back-to-back Olympic decathlon champion in more than 20 years.
The last decathlon athlete to win two gold medals in a row was Great Britain’s Daley Thompson, who won the decathlon gold medal in the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympic games.
4. His wife is also an Olympian!
Ashton met heptathlon and women’s pentathlon athlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton when they were teammates at the University of Oregon, and the two married in July 2013. They both competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and are back at it again in Rio this summer!

5. You may recognize him from a certain magazine cover…
Remember that awesome Olympic-themed Vogue cover that Gigi Hadid did with a super hot guy? Yep, that’s Ashton! The magazine even deemed him the “World’s Greatest Athlete,” but apparently he’s not too in touch with his famous co-cover star — Ashton admitted that he asked Gigi, “Have you done a lot of these shoots or are you fairly new at them?” LOL!
