The teen that allegedly killed a Florida couple after reportedly taking flakka may not survive to explain why he did it! Austin Harrouff, who allegedly tried to eat one of the victim’s faces, may die from injuries he suffered during the attack.
Austin, a 19-year-old Florida State University student, is recovering at a Palm Beach County hospital after allegedly killing John Joseph Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53. The student is “having hand surgery…due to an injury he sustained during the attack,” a Martin County Sheriff’s Officer spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
Though he’s reportedly in “stable condition,” officials don’t know for certain whether or not he will survive. There is a chance that Austin could die from either “sustained trauma” he received while fighting with the police or even from an alleged drug overdose.
Austin is “still heavily sedated” and is not yet alert to speak with investigators. So, there’s a chance that Austin will never get to tell his side of this horrific story. On Aug. 15, the FSU fraternity brother appeared at John and Michelle’s home before arguing with them in their garage. This fight turned fatal, as Austin allegedly used sharp tools to stab both to death. When the authorities arrived, Austin was reportedly found chewing on John’s face while Michelle lay dead on the ground.
“The suspect was on top of our victim, clutching him in a bear hug and biting him in the face,” Sheriff William Snyder told PEOPLE, adding that four officers and a K9 unit struggled to restrain Austin. They even had to deploy a stun gun several times! “Finally, after minutes of fighting, they were able to get the offender off of the victim, but the victim was dead.”
Austin didn’t know the couple, so the motive for this murder is still unknown. Police suspect that he was possibly under the influence of flakka, a synthetic designer drug that invokes a state of “excited delirium.” The worst and most extreme side effects of this drug, also known as “bath salts,” are severe aggression and even cannibalism!
No wonder that the officers think that Austin, who allegedly gnawed on the dead face of his victim, was under this drug’s effect. Hopefully, Austin will recover and offer all the answers that the authorities (and the victim’s families) are desperate to find out.
Our thoughts continue to go out to the families and friends for all those involved, HollywoodLifers.
