At 90 years old, Dick Van Dyke is still cooler than all of us. When visiting a Los Angeles Denny’s on Aug. 12, the singer and his quartet, The Vantastix, broke into a surprise a cappella performance and the video is pretty much the most delightful part of our day.
After visiting Fox’s morning show, Good Day L.A., to promote his memoir Keep Moving, the Mary Poppins star, 90, headed into Denny’s with his a cappella group, The Vantastix, and after they eat, they figured… why not break into song? Dick Van Dyke and his group performed — perfectly, I may add — the theme for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Of course they were surrounded by people, and we have to say we’re very happy that viewers pulled out their phones to record it.
“Joy is contagious,” Dick wrote on his Facebook page sharing the video. “We have a full length concert coming up on August 28th in Cerritos!! Bring the bacon and eggs with a side of grits!!” He also tweeted out the video, writing, “Breakfast at Denny’s, with a side of grits makes me want to sing!!” He even answered a fan who asked why he doesn’t go to local restaurants instead; “No local restaurants that we know of serve grits,” he wrote. A good country man at heart!
On his appearance on Good Day L.A., he revealed that while he is getting up there in age, he still feels 50. “Your perspective is everything. Some people say [age is] only a number and those kind of things — that’s baloney: It’s a number,” he said, adding that his secret to staying young is just what his book says, “keep moving.” And he’s definitely right.
The actor and singer landed his first role 49 years ago — and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Clearly, he shouldn’t — he totally still sounds great!
