What a game to kick off the opening weekend of the Premier League season! Arsenal take on rivals Liverpool on Aug. 14 at 11am EST at the Emirates Stadium desperate to get their season off to a bang. But will the Gunners fire blanks? Click to watch!
Arsenal come into this match with all sorts of injury problems, a familiar tale if you follow the boys in red and white. Their injury crisis is in the defensive positions, with veteran Per Mertesacker out, as well as Lauren Koscielny. Those two normally make up the central defensive pairing, and even the back-up Brazilian Gabriel is injured too. That means Calum Chambers, 21, and Rob Holding, 20, (making his debut) will be at the heart of Arsenal’s back line.
But where Arsenal usually flourish is in the attacking third. They will have the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi to choose from. Those names on their day can frighten any team in the Premier League.
Liverpool, under the guidance of German coach Jurgen Klopp, scored the most goals out of any Premier League team in 2016. But they’re also suffering defensively, they have first choice left back Alberto Moreno injured, as well as his stand in James Milner, who is rated doubtful to make the game. The game could also be too soon for Daniel Sturridge, who is short of match fitness.
Given the fact that both teams are struggling in defense, and have a multitude of attacking talents, there should be quite a few goals in this one. However, both teams may have to settle for a 1-1 draw, and at this stage in the season they’d be happy with that.
