The City of Manchester expects! Pep Guardiola kicks of his City reign with a home against last season’s strugglers Sunderland on Aug. 13 at 12:30pm EST. The Citizens are many people’s tip for the Premier League title, but how will they fair in their opening game? Click to find out!
Now, Pep was known for creating his own breed of winning soccer. He had success first at Barcelona, where it can be argued he got the best out of Lionel Messi. From there, and after winning multiple championships, he went to Bayern Munich and repeated that success by winning another two Bundesliga titles. City hired him to have an immediate effect, so he’s under lots of pressure from the start.
However, Pep has already used City’s deep pockets and heavy financial resources to boost his roster. John Stones, one of England’s most promising defenders, has come in for a $65 million fee from Everton. They’ve also added Leroy Sane for $55m, Gabriel Jesus for $36m and Ilkay Gundogan for $30m, just to name a few. They’ve been the biggest spenders in the Premier League, but as Leicester City proved last year you can’t always buy success.
As for Sunderland, it’s all change at the top. After last season’s coach Sam Allardyce, who saved the club from relegation, left to take the England national team job they had to hire a new coach. David Moyes was that man, and the former Manchester United coach is an astute appointment for the Black Cats.
He’s already gone back to his old team and plucked some of their youthful talent, including Adnan Janusaj, Paddy McNair and Donald Love. They’ve gone straight into the squad for this one, so that’ll help the away team. It should be an entertaining one!
