Looks like Demi Lovato is taking the high road! After many fans were put off by a tasteless joke made by Demi’s mom about Zika virus at the Olympics, the singer has taken to Twitter, issuing her ‘deepest apologies’ for laughing at her mother’s comment. Read her AND her mom’s sorrowful words here!
Demi Lovato, 23, posted to Twitter on Aug. 13 after many were offended by a Snapchat story she had shared earlier featuring her mom, Dianna Hart. In the clip, Dianna joked, “Everybody down in Rio gonna get the Zika virus!” Demi could be heard giggling in the background and added three laughing emojis to the video. And apparently fans were NOT happy about it.
My deepest and sincerest apologies to everyone who was offended by this. I never meant to hurt anyone. I’m sorry. 😥 https://t.co/Xm2OtjaKIj

“In no way did I mean to offend anyone last night. I was laughing at how southern my mom sounded, not the issue at hand. Deepest apologies,” the “Confident” singer tweeted after hearing the negative reactions to her video. Dianna also apologized for her insensitivity via Twitter, writing, “My deepest and sincerest apologies to everyone who was offended by this. I never meant to hurt anyone. I’m sorry. .”
Zika virus truly is no laughing matter and Snapchat users were anything BUT amused by Dianna’s “rude” remarks. Dinna also appeared to be consuming alcoholic beverages at the time she made the comment, which could have played a role in her lack of judgement. But even still, fans viewed her comment as ignorant and irresponsible amid ongoing health concerns about the illness, which can cause MAJOR birth defects in babies born to infected mothers.
One user at the handle @rihsmg wrote, “How are you gonna joke about the Zika virus w ur daughter. Demi’s fam is trash.” Another commented, “No wonder Demi is such a dumb***….look at her mom. #DemiLovatoIsOverParty.” And yet another user, @andreloganx, a native of Brazil, wrote, “People [who] make jokes [about] a serious problem like diseases do not deserve an ounce of respect. #DemiLovatoIsOverParty.” Yikes!
But hey, at least Demi can admit when she’s wrong, right? We totally respect her and her mom for apologizing right away.
