This is so heartbreaking. Texas Rangers player Prince Fielder cried during his emotional press conference on Aug. 10 as he announced his retirement. After undergoing two spinal surgeries, doctors told he could no longer play baseball. Click to WATCH.
“The doctors told me since I had two spinal fusions, I can’t play Major League Baseball anymore,” a tearful Prince, 32, said at the press conference. He could barely talk because he was so emotional. “So I want to just thank my teammates and the coaching staff. I’m going to really miss those guys. They’re a lot a fun. I’ve been in a big league clubhouse since I was their age [pointing to his sons]. To not be able to play is going to be tough.”
The Rangers’ designated hitter was clearly upset that he was showing so much emotion. Prince, who had on a neck brace, frequently got mad at himself for shedding tears. He just wanted to stay strong so badly! Prince’s two young sons, Jadyn and Haven, were by his side for the heartbreaking press conference.
“I’m happy I got to enjoy my career so far and play with these guys,” Prince said through tears. “They’re awesome.” He continued to thank his teammates for their constant support over the years.
He completely broke down as he thanked his wife, Chanel, for standing by his side amidst his physical struggles. “She wouldn’t let me get down on myself at the house, she wouldn’t let me mope,” he said. Prince was weeping as he looked as his sons. “No matter what, I was always the best to them,” he said.
Prince played 42 games in 2014 before having his first surgery. He played 158 games last season for the Texas Rangers. He was selected in the first round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Detroit Tigers before being traded to the Rangers in 2014. Major League Baseball just won’t be the same without him.
