Hope Solo may need some ice for this burn! Sweden’s coach, Pia Sundhage, didn’t take kindly to the US goalkeeper’s sore loser comments after the big game and wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine. We’ve got all the details on her diss back, right here!
Pia Sundhage didn’t let Hope Solo‘s bitter remarks get the best of her. Instead of going off the deep end, Sweden’s soccer coach kept her retort short and simple. She told reporters, “I don’t give a crap. I’m going to Rio, she’s going home,” according to Sports Illustrated. Ouch! Hope, 35, previously called the Swedish athletes a “bunch of cowards,” and said the “better team didn’t win,” after USA’s loss at the Summer Olympics quarterfinals on Aug. 11. Hope was obviously upset about the verdict, since it meant that the the women’s national team’s hopes for a forth consecutive gold medal was squashed. No Cable TV? Relax! Obviously, this is a tough pill to swallow for Hope, who tirelessly trained for the competition. After cooling down a little, she did make a statement to clarify her harsh words. She said, “I’ve won and lost a lot of games in my career. And not all wins have been pretty. Sometimes it’s just finding a way to win that matters the most and tonight Sweden found a way to beat us.” Hope continued, “Nevertheless, I am so proud of the way we played tonight, our fight, our heart, and the skill we showed. Things don’t always go the way you want them to. Such is life, and such is sport.” True that!
Hope also got booed for being overly cautious while playing against New Zealand. She did have a better response to the opposition then, joking, “I’m glad the fans had fun. If they had more fun at my expense, more power to them.” Now, Sweden will be looking forward to the semifinal match, thanks to their 4-3 penalty kick score lead. They’re set to play against the winner of Brazil and Australia’s game. Game on!
