Ryan Lochte is clearly having the toughest time accepting that this is probably Michael Phelps’ last Olympics. Lochte is even challenging Phelps to a rematch in Tokyo 2020! Click to watch the funny vid!
Ryan Lochte, 32, just wants one more chance to try and beat Michael Phelps, 31, in the Olympic pool. So much so that on the Today Show on Friday, Aug. 12, Lochte called for a rematch in Tokyo 2020, even though Phelps has already announced his retirement after the Rio games. Still, Lochte “guaranteed” Phelps would be back, and they would swim once more!

“So, Michael, I’ll see you in Tokyo,” Lochte said to the cameras after telling Matt Lauer that Phelps is one of his biggest inspirations. “He brings the best out of me, and hopefully I can say the same for him. The rivalry that we’ve created and that friendship, I’m definitely going to cherish it for the rest of my life.” Aww!
Phelps’ mom, Debbie, is right there with Lochte, saying she would “love” for her son to compete in another Olympics! “I already have the race picked out!” she told Hoda Kotb and Lauer. It wouldn’t be the first time Phelps has come out of retirement to compete!
Lochte and Phelps have been on the US National Swim Team together since 2004 and have swam against each other in four Olympic games. Lochte has only bested Phelps once, during the London Olympics in the 400-meter individual medley. But, they both swear it’s a friendly rivalry!
The final duel in the pool between the two, if Phelps truly does retire, was on Thursday night when they swam the 200 individual medley. Lochte first had the lead, but Phelps caught up and took first to win his fourth gold medal in the event and his record-setting 22nd gold medal overall. Lochte, the second-most decorated US swimmer, came in fifth.
We’re glad these two are inspired by each other and we truly do hope they represent the USA in Tokyo 2020! What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Do you want to see Phelps back in the 2020 Summer Olympics? Are you Team Lochte or Team Phelps?
