Your new TV obsession has arrived in ‘The Get Down.’ Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore and more are taking us back to the ’70s in a big way. So what’s this show all about? Before binging the first few episodes, here are 5 things you need to know about the new Netflix show!
1. Only 6 episodes of The Get Down are out.
Netflix is trying something a little different with The Get Down. While most of the time you’re able to binge watch entire seasons on Netflix, only 6 episodes of the musical drama are available to watch right now.
2. It’s Baz Luhrmann’s latest project.
This is Baz Luhrmann’s biggest project since he made The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013. Baz revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he has been working on The Get Down for over 10 years. The show is the first time Baz has worked on a musical project since Moulin Rouge. In addition to being an executive producer, Baz will also direct the first two episodes and the series finale.
3. The Get Down is about the birth of hip-hop.
The Get Down takes place in 1970s New York City and focuses on a group of South Bronx teenagers. The show is being described by Netflix as a “mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco.”
4. Jaden Smith is in it!
Jaden, 18, plays Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling in the Netflix series. He is credited in the first 6 episodes of The Get Down. Jaden is featured three times on The Get Down’s soundtrack. He’s got a song called “Losing Your Mind” with Raury, 20, and a solo song titled “Welcome To The Get Down.”
5.The second half of the season won’t be premiering any time soon.
Netflix has not announced an official release for the second half of The Get Down’s first season will premiere. You’re going to have to wait a while — it’s going to be in 2017!
