A rapper, a comedian AND an actress? Awkwafina can do it all! Cast in the gambling spinoff ‘Ocean’s 8,’ Awkwafina will make her silver screen debut opposite an all-female cast, including some of Hollywood’s hottest actresses like Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett. Here are the five most intriguing facts about the rising star.
Born Nora Lum, Awkwafina, 28, has made QUITE the popular name for herself — and now that she’s been cast in the feature film Ocean’s 8 with a star-studded cast leading the way, people can’t stop buzzing about her! Who is she? Where did she come from? We’ve got the answers!
1. She may be a comedian, but she draws inspiration from dark places.
Awkwafina discovered the readings of Charles Bukowski at the tender age of 11 when her mother passed away, and immediately felt a connection to his writings. Charles is known to base the majority of his books around alcoholism, depression, and the loss of love. “He is grimy, uncensored, and real to an extent that not many other writers of his time could pull off,” she told Mochi Mag. Awkwafina also draws inspiration from the music of Tom Waits, who was known for his distinct growl-like sound.
2. She takes pride in Asian stereotypes.
Awkwarfina’s signature look includes big, rounded glasses, which embrace the “nerd culture” surrounding Asians, and her clothing style also mirrors the Japanese school-girl look. To Awkwafina, her glasses resemble power, joking that Asians “are always the first to become blind after hours of hunched-over studying.”
3. She landed a supporting role in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.
It’s true — Awkwafina got to hang out with the ruggedly handsome Zac Efron on set. In the sequel, Awkwafina plays a sexy, ready-to-party sorority girl, despite the fact that she claims to be awkward both on and off camera. Ocean’s 8 will be Awkwafina’s first leading character appearance, but playing smaller roles in Dude and Bad Rap gave her lots of practice!
4. Maybe the ONE thing she can’t do is cook.
When you’ve got a jam-packed schedule like Awkwafina does, who has time to learn how to cook? But when she does find some downtime to relax at home, she practices her skills in the kitchen. “I recently celebrated learning how to cook a chicken breast in a pan,” she continues. “I feel like I’m invincible now.”
5. Not only does she rap, but she plays her own instruments too!
Nicknamed somewhat of a band geek, Awkwafina was very musical student at New York’s LaGuardia High where she learned to play the trumpet, and trained in classical and jazz music. She began writing music and rapping at the age of 17.
