The Perseid meteor shower is happening tonight, Aug. 10, and you DON’T want to miss this galactic event! If you’re not up for stargazing out in the heated weather, don’t worry — HollywoodLife.com has hooked you up with a live stream! WATCH here.
Space-obsessed night owls, you’re in for a treat — tonight is the spectacular Perseid meteor shower! The event, which happens every year in August, is “when Earth ventures through trails of debris left behind by an ancient comet,” as NASA puts it. So cool! This year, NASA expects we’ll see more meteors than ever due to Jupiter’s gravity, which has “tugged some streams of comet material closer to Earth”. Basically, that just means more stuff is in the air for us to see. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL NASA LIVE STREA OF THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER.
If you want to watch the shower in person, here are some tips courtesy of NASA’s Rhiannon Blaauw:
1. Try to get away from bright lights. For city residents, it might help to try to go somewhere in the country.
2. Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. “I would suggest just lying on your back and taking in as much of the sky as possible,” she says. “You don’t want to look in any particular direction, just lie on your back and look straight up.” It can take about 45 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust, NASA says.
3. Think about having some caffeine beforehand, she suggests, to stay awake for the late-night show.
The best viewing time is between midnight and dawn, and the meteors can be seen around the world (though less so in the Southern Hemisphere). Enjoy!
