Everything started out great for Andranik, but his hopes for an Olympic medal came to a shocking halt when he dislocated his elbow while trying to lift 430 pounds in the 77k weightlifting event. The disgusting injury happened when he lifted the weight above his head.
All of sudden, Andranik’s arm bent in an ungodly direction. The 20-year-old screamed out in pain and immediately dropped the weight. Andranik was rushed off the stage to receive medical help. His coach watched in horror as Andranik’s Olympic dream ended in an instant. Andranik was later seen being carried to an ambulance on a stretcher, according to Daily Mail.
Andranik won the European championship and finished third at the world championships in 2015. Kazakhstan’s Nijat Rahimov eventually won the weightlifting event at the Olympics. China’s Xiaojun Lyu finished second and Egypt’s Mohamad Mahmoud took home the bronze medal.
Sadly, this isn’t the first horrific injury to happen at the Olympics this year. French gymnast Samir Ait Said broke his leg during the qualifying round. He snapped his leg during a vault landing. The injury left everyone who watched speechless. His leg was bent in the wrong direction, and it was tough to look at. Samir kept a brave face and even waved to the crowd as he was taken away on a stretcher. Shockingly, Samir was back on his feet just a few days after suffering the terrible injury. Hopefully Andranik has a similar recovery!
