Everyone’s talking about Nate Ebner right now. The NFL player is making quite the statement at the 2016 Olympics — playing RUGBY! So, who is Nate and why is he playing rugby instead of football? Here are 5 key things to know about him!
1. He plays for the New England Patriots.
Nate is a safety for the New England Patriots. The 27-year-old was chosen in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He’s been with the team ever since and was a part of the team when they won Super Bowl XLIX in 2014.
2. By participating in the Olympics, he’s making history.
He is the first active NFL player to compete at a Summer Olympics. Nate received permission from Patriots coach Bill Belichick to skip offseason football workouts to compete. He made his first appearance in an Olympics rugby sevens match in the second half of USA’s game against Argentina on Aug. 9. Team USA beat Argentina and will play Fiji on Aug. 10.
3. He didn’t even play football high school!
Nate never touched the football field in high school. He walked on to the Ohio State Buckeyes’ college football team during his junior year of college. He became a part of the Buckeyes’ special teams.
4. He became the youngest player to play on the United States national rugby sevens team.
Rugby has always been in Nate’s blood. He started to play on the United States national rugby sevens team at just 17 years old.
5. His father was murdered.
Nate’s father, Jeff Ebner, was beaten to death during an attempted robbery in 2008 at their family business. He was only 53 years old. The man who killed Nate’s father was sentenced to life in prison for murder in 2010.
