Justice is served. Lonnie David Franklin Jr., better known as the ‘Grim Sleeper’ serial killer, received a death sentence on Aug. 10, after being convicted for a slew of murders that spanned over two decades. HollywoodLife.com has all the details on his ruling!
Lonnie David Franklin Jr., 63, must now come to terms with his sentence. The former garbage collector received the death penalty, according to LA Times, after being found guilty for murdering over a dozen women in South Los Angeles between 1985 and 2007. “This is not a sentence of vengeance,” Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy explained to the defendant as loved ones of his victims looked on, with tears streaming down their faces. She continued, “I can’t think of anyone I’ve encountered in all my years in the criminal justice system that has committed the monstrous crimes that you have.”
Lonnie was convicted earlier this year of killing nine women and a teenage girl. The judge read aloud each of the 10 names before saying, “You shall suffer the death penalty.” Prosecutors also tried to connect him to five additional slayings, but couldn’t provide adequate evidence. (Detectives actually believe he may have killed at least 25 women.) So sad.
Lonnie first earned the “Grim Sleeper” nickname when he appeared to take a break from his slayings between 1988 and 2002, convincing some that he’d actually stopped his grisly pattern. However, the detectives on the case believe the serial killer simply didn’t get caught during that timeframe.
Lonnie reportedly targeted vulnerable and “poor, black women,” often dumping their naked bodies alongside roads or in the trash.“The defendant took my daughter, murdered her, put her in a plastic bag – a trash bag – like she was trash,” Laverne Peters, the mother of a 25-year-old victim found in a dumpster in 2007, told the court before he was sentenced. “I love my daughter. I miss her very much. I think about her all the time. But, I thank God that I live to finally see this day.” Maybe now, the families will find peace.
