A number of people on social media were more concerned with Gabby Douglas’ behavior at the Olympic medals ceremony on August 9, rather than the fact that she just won gold. They were appalled that the two-time Olympian didn’t put her hand over her heart during the national anthem. Seriously!
Gabby Douglas, 20, created quite a ruckus on social media on August 9 after she and her fellow Team USA gymnasts won the gold in the gymnastics team competition. During the medal ceremony, as they accepted their gold, the US national anthem played, per tradition.
While Gabby’s four teammates stood with her, with their hands over their hearts during the national anthem, she instead stood solemnly with her hands clasped together. For some, this was a sign of major disrespect! They freaked out all over Twitter, saying they lost all respect for the Olympian, whom they admired and cheered on up to that very moment — because in their eyes, she allegedly hated America. Wow!

No respect for Gabby Douglas! Not putting your hand over your heart during YOUR country's national anthem. Girl bye.

Gabby apologized for the incident, but she really didn’t need to; she didn’t do anything wrong! Traditionalists may disagree, but the hand over heart salute is not a requirement for standing at attention to the national anthem. It’s proper to stand at attention toward the flag, and place a hand over the heart if you feel you should do so, like when saying the Pledge of Allegiance!
