Taran Killam was just as shocked as the rest of us when he learned that he wouldn’t be coming back to ‘SNL’ for season 42. In an all-new interview, Taran reveals he was ‘never given a reason why’ the show decided not to pick up his contract.
“I don’t know fully,” Taran, 34, told Uproxx when asked what happened. “I don’t know the other side of it. You sign for seven years, so I had one more year. I had sort of had it in my head I would make this upcoming year my last year, but then heard they weren’t going to pick up my contract. I was never given a reason why, really. I can assume until the cows come home. But I do know I’m directing this movie [Why We’re Killing Gunther with Arnold Schwarzenegger] and I’ll have two months of post-production that would have bled into the SNL production schedule, so we kind of communicated that.”
Despite being blindsided by the news, Taran has nothing but good things to say about his time at SNL. He said he has “no gripes at all” and is “so, so, so lucky to have been given the time I’ve been given.”
After the shocked reaction from his fans, Taran took to Twitter to thank them for their support: “A big thank you for all the Love from my fans. Lorne was kind enough to understand I needed more time to dedicate to my undefeated @RamsNFL.”
Taran is known for hilarious sketches like “Mokiki” and the “We Did Stop” parody with Miley Cyrus, 23. His celebrity impressions were a cut above the rest. His impressions of Matthew McConaughey, 46, Ashton Kutcher, 38, Ted Cruz, 45, Brad Pitt, 52, and more were incredible.
Season 42 of Saturday Night Live is going to look and feel completely different with Taran not around. Longtime cast member Jay Pharoah, 28, is also not returning for the upcoming season. Featured player Jon Rudnitsky, 26, who joined the cast in season 41, will not be coming back as well. Saturday Night Live will return this fall on NBC.
