Wow, this is SO beautiful! In honor of her baby son, who sadly passed away at 10 months old, Demi Frandsen donated 131 gallons of her own breast milk in order to help other babies. Read her incredibly inspirational story here and get ready to feel all the feels!
Demi Frandsen, a mom from Omaha, Nebraska, suffered a devastating loss when her baby son, Leo, passed away at just 10 months old. And instead of letting her heartbreaking circumstances break her, she pushed on and decided to do something to help other children — donating 131 gallons of her breastmilk to the children’s hospital in what is currently their largest breastmilk donation ever!
Demi began her donations after she lost Leo, who was born two months early, at 10 months old on October 22. He had gastroschisis, a birth defect that left him with some organs uncovered by skin. And although, due to his illness, little Leo couldn’t handle much milk, Demi said that breastfeeding him was the one way she felt she could help her son, according to an NBC affiliate news station.
“With a Q-tip we’d put it in my milk and we’d swab his mouth,” she said. And she ended up finding it in her heart to give back to others in need after her own little one passed away. It’s pretty unbelievable, but Demi was SO dedicated to the cause that she woke herself up every three hours to pump the donated breast milk. “My final donation was 17,503 ounces…which is like 131 gallons…so a dairy aisle basically,” she said. Wow!
After Leo was born, Demi spent months by his side at the NICU at the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. “There was no skin to pull over his exposed organs,” she explained to ABC 6. “It was kind of a new case they had not seen before.” And while pumping her milk for other babies has been an amazing thing for her, she and her husband and son miss Leo every day.
“We’re still trying to figure out how to live a life without such a big part of it, a little piece of our soul,” she tearfully said. “We miss our Leo. It’s not even day to day. It’s moment to moment.” She added, “He was worth it. He was worth all of this. His life in 10 months was the best 10 months of mine.”
