As fans watched Michael Phelps continue his impressive medal winning streak with a huge win in the men’s swimming 4×100 freestyle relay on Aug. 7, they couldn’t help noticing something a little strange: Michael was covered in bruises! So what happened to the five-time Olympian? Find out here!
Although Michael Phelps didn’t appear to be in any pain as he led Team USA to winning gold in the men’s swimming 4×100 freestyle relay finals, the 31-year-old swim star had spots all over his upper body. Since the relay was his first event, it was hard to believe that the 2016 Rio Olympics had already beat up the superstar swimmer. Thankfully, that’s not the case!
The circular bruises on Michael’s shoulders and back are actually the result of a healing technique called cupping. Those spots are a result of the small glass cups used in the healing process, which are heated and placed on the skin, then pulled from the body in order to loosen and relax muscles. After the procedure, recipients are covered in bruises for about two whole weeks!
In fact, Michael isn’t the only celebrity doing this rather strange therapy. Remember when Justin Bieber shared a picture covered in spots? Yep, same thing. Apparently these hotties love looking like human dalmatians!

Michael didn’t comment about his spotty body after the 4×100 free relay (which you can relive above), as he was far too excited about taking the gold medal back from France in the race to even think about the weird spots on his body. But fellow American athlete Alex Naddour has gushed over how much the healing technique has helped him, and we’re thinking Michael feels the same way!
“That’s been the secret that I have had through this year that keeps me healthy,” the gymnast told USA Today about cupping. “It’s been better than any money I’ve spent on anything else.”
Considering Michael was a major reason for Team USA’s huge win on Aug. 7, it seems his muscles are nice and ready for more wins thanks to this therapy. We’ll likely be seeing him on the medal podium at least a few more times in this year’s Summer Olympics, so we’ll just have to get used to the fact that he’s polka dotted!
