Fireworks, music, dancing, and the visual arts all come together to ring in the official start of the Olympics, and this year is no exception! The world will be watching as local performers take center stage on Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. EST to watch the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Held at the Maracana Stadium, sexy pop artist Anitta, 23, and musician-turned-politician Gil Gilberto, 74, will have all eyes on them as the ceremony’s headliners, along with Caetano Veloso, 73.
Many performers are using this once in a lifetime opportunity as a chance to showcase their talents to the world. “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I was invited,” Anitta reveals to Billboard. “The whole world will be watching, and that’s very important for me. I come from the ghetto in Brazil where we don’t have a lot of career opportunities, so I’m sure my family and people who live there never imagined that one day I’d become a singer and be able to perform at an event like the Olympics.” We haven’t heard her music before, but she already sounds amazing!
Joining Anitta on stage are Grammy Award–winning singers and guitarists Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil to bring a touch of old school-ness to the ceremony. You can check out their music on iTunes. The opening ceremony is expected to last roughly three hours, so you better grab all the popcorn, nachos, potato chips, and COCKTAILS you can carry! Naturally, the opening will include the iconic lighting of the Olympic Pyre. Don’t forget to tune in! You won’t want to miss a second of this!
