Disappointing. Olympic officials have announced that 118 Russian athletes will be barred from competition in Rio due to their participation in a government-sanctioned doping program. Keep reading for all the details on this unfortunate punishment on the eve of the opening ceremonies.
The controversies for the 2016 Rio games begin before the Olympics even start. Officials have handed down a brutal punishment to the Russian Olympic team by banning 118 athletes for their involvement in a doping program created by the Russian government says a report by The New York Times.
“Olympic officials announced on Thursday night that 271 Russian athletes would be allowed to compete in the Rio Games,” says the report. This is terrible for the integrity of the Olympics and for all the Russian athletes who have trained their entire lives and put their faith in the government approved program. So sad. The ban comes across several different events and is far-sweeping says the report.
The International Olympic Committee announced the news on Aug. 4th after discussing the serious problem with each official of the 28 sports featured in the summer Olympics. The governing bodies were asked to look at every athlete and their individual drug history when determining their eligibility. Not all hope is lost for athletes who have been denied the right to compete, they may still appeal to a world sports arbitration court in Switzerland.
During the 2012 games the Russians sent 436 athletes and now they will be reduced to a team which is smaller than any other major country in the world including China and England. The United States, by contrast, will be showcasing 556 athletes in Rio. The American team which includes gymnasts, basketball players, tennis stars and more is the largest squad in Rio. In their last Olympic appearance, the Russians brought home 82 medals.
