The YouTube star behind the viral ‘Gingers Do Have Souls’ video has come out as transgender after a 5-month hiatus. Claire Kittrell revealed in an emotional YouTube video that she is done ‘pretending to be someone else.’ Click to WATCH her brave announcement.
Claire Kittrell, 23, formerly Michael Kittrell, posted the video on Aug. 2 telling her fans that her 5-month hiatus from YouTube was because she had started her transition into a woman and was in the midst of hormone replacement therapy.
“I’m not going to live another year of my life pretending to be someone else. I’m just not going to do it,” she says in the video. “I know a lot of you are going to make fun of me. I know a lot of you are going to think that I’m joking. This is the hardest video I’ve ever made, because I’m not.”
She admits that Caitlyn Jenner’s brave transition helped her with her decision to finally embrace who she truly is. Claire confesses she’s unable to afford gender reassignment surgery right now, but she’s happy as long as she’s her true self.
“I’m not going to pretend to be someone else anymore. Not in front of the camera and not behind one,” she adds. “It may seem cliché, but Caitlyn Jenner helped me out a lot. I know that she gets a lot of flack because she is a lady of means. She has a lot of money and not every trans person can look like her because she’s able to afford surgery.”
Claire is best known for her viral video “Gingers Do Have Souls.” The video was posted in 2010 and has since gotten over 40 million views. In the video, Claire blasts South Park for insinuating that gingers don’t have souls. She goes on a rant slamming people who’ve bullied her over her red hair.
