Donald Trump got a Purple Heart without even trying! The GOP candidate announced in a Aug. 2 speech that a military veteran had gifted him a Purple Heart, and people were not happy about the joke he made about the gift. See what he said right here!
“Something very nice just happened to me. A man came up to me and he handed me his Purple Heart,” Donald told the crowd, holding up the medal. “Now I said to him, is that the real one or is that a copy? And he said, ‘That’s my real Purple Heart.’ I have such confidence in you. And I said, ‘Man, that’s like big stuff. I always wanted to get the Purple Heart, this was much easier.’ But I tell you, it was such an honor.”
Donald, 70, proceeded to bring the veteran up on stage, snapping a picture with the Lieutenant Colonel before shaking his hand and thanking him for such a nice gift. The man is clearly a huge fan of Donald, as he declined Donald’s offer to speak to the crowd because he simply wanted Donald to “keep saying what he’s been saying.” Jeez, this guy is practically Donald’s No. 1 supporter!
Considering Purple Hearts are awarded to service members who were wounded in combat — and Donald has never been in any sort of war battle — many were appalled by the fact that Donald would make a joke about such a serious, respectable award. “😱 What?” wrote one Twitter user, with another suggesting that Trump should have respectively declined the veterans’ Purple Heart offer and simply thanked the man for his service. See some of the other frustrated tweets below:
Meanwhile, on the Purple Heart, a tip from gift theory: he should have "refused with gratitude", saying he could not do such a gift justice.

Who the hell says "I've always wanted a purple heart"? My uncle would gladly trade his in for his leg and eye sight.

"I always wanted a Purple Heart" said no service member ever. pic.twitter.com/ES9yJzeHl8

Trump can't even hit the softballs lobbed at him. Here, a Purple Heart for you, say something respectful now about veterans. Nope.

The fact that Trump kept the purple heart only underscores his lack of understanding or respect for the medal.

"Im always wanted a Purple Heart" is like saying "I always wanted to get shot".

Trump accepts unearned purple heart, offers America his black heart. pic.twitter.com/UDGf9ITmJG

Perhaps the most important tweet, though, was shared by Katy Tur, a Foreign Correspondent for NBC News who has been covering Donald’s campaign. “The man who gave Trump his purple heart told me earlier today, it was a copy of his purple heart,” she revealed. She totally exposed Donald for being a liar! Or maybe the veteran lied to Donald so he’d think it’s more special? Since Donald didn’t earn the Purple Heart himself anyway, we’re going to hope it’s just a copy!
