Ouch! Simon Cowell is NOT pleased with Liam Payne now that he’s going solo. The ‘X Factor’ judge even said it was ‘annoying’ that Liam decided to sign with a competing record label after becoming so successful with One Direction. HollywoodLife.com is spilling all the tea on how Simon feels.
Simon Cowell, 56, helped groom Liam Payne, 22, for super stardom when he scouted the singer as a teen on The X Factor. So it only makes sense that the famed entrepreneur would feel slighted about his protege embarking upon a solo career. Simon vented his frustrations about Liam recently signing with Capitol Records, saying the following during an interview with The Sun, “It’s a bit annoying if I am honest with you – mainly because it is another label who has now got your artist, who you worked with for so many years. But that is the music business, unfortunately. I don’t think anyone else from the band will do that.”
It’s been quite a journey for Liam, who has been a part of One Direction since the very beginning. Liam’s been signed to Syco, even during the group’s two year hiatus, so his new solo deal came as a shock to Simon. “We had spoken a lot – him and I – about what he wanted to do next. But I guess he read about Harry Style’s deal and thought we weren’t interested.” He continued: “My impression was that he wasn’t in any hurry to make a record because he discussed this last year. So I was a bit surprised.”
The America’s Got Talent judge even noted his regrets, “Of course there is a part of you that goes: ‘Maybe we should have had the conversation.’ That maybe is my fault but it has happened now.” Liam’s band mate Harry, who is still with Sony, also signed a HUGE solo deal with Columbia Records on June 23. (He’s still a member of 1D and will reportedly continue to make music with the boy band at the end of their break.) It’s hard to confirm whether or not Liam will return to One Direction, but his sister did spill that he has NO plans to quit for good!
