Will Nick Foles trade in his horns for wings? The quarterback was released from the Los Angeles Rams on July 27, one day before training camp. So are the New York Jets planning to swoop him, since they need an experienced QB to back up Gino Smith? We’ve got the scoop, here.
When one door closes, another opens — and that phrase may certainly apply to Nick Foles, 27, who was released by the LA Rams, per his request, after spending just one season with the team. Now that the quarterback is officially back on the open market, we can’t help but see some truths in the speculations that the NY Jets may need someone with his exact qualifications. Given that the boys in green and white have yet to re-sign on the dotted line with Ryan Fitzpatrick, they may be on the lookout for an adept player with some major NFL experience.
The Jets need a safety net, or at least a QB with star potential to help back up Gino Smith — since he may sink or swim, so their eyes are likely on the prize right now. Nick started 11 games for the St. Louis Rams last season, before their big move, but his stats were less than stellar.
This doesn’t mean that Nick doesn’t have some serious veteran skills, however. He acquired his position with the Rams in 2015 after serving as a QB with the Philadelphia Eagles. Nick’s likely waiting for his next big break and searching for his niche, considering that he hasn’t been around the Rams since they traded up to choose Jared Goff as their first draft pick.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles also noted in June that he would consider hiring a veteran quarterback if they don’t re-sign Ryan, saying: “Yeah, we’ll entertain that. We’ve talked about that,” according to the NY Daily News. This certainly adds fuel to the fire. It’s only a bummer Nick didn’t get to join the Rams on their long-awaited journey back to LA!
