With so many incredible acts in Season 11 of ‘America’s Got Talent,’ it’s tough to predict who will win. But the teenagers have proved to be some of the best contestants in the competition, and one of them will surely be taking home the $1 million prize!
When we met 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal in Week 2 of America’s Got Talent auditions, it was clear that age didn’t mean anything when it came to success on the show. Grace was soon followed by the likes of Kadie Lynn Roberson, Calysta Bevier, Jayna Brown, and Laura Bretan, who all managed to blow the judges away with powerful singing performances. In addition to the five singers, self-taught body contortionist Sofie Dossi and comedian Lori Mae Hernandez are still in the competition. There’s some serious AGT-winning talent inside these seven teens — and to think not one of them are even legal to drive yet!
It’s easy to love the younger kids in competitions like this, because they’re typically pretty candid and it’s fun to see what kind of performance they come up with. But the thing that sets these AGT teens apart from other kids their age is that they become completely different people when they’re performing. Sure, looking at them, they still look like the 13- and 14-year-old middle school students that they are, but their performances amaze in the same way that 30-year veterans do on stage. And that’s what tells me one of them will be making it to the end.
For example, Jayna and Laura sang on night one of the live shows (July 26), and the Dolby Theatre stage didn’t seem to even phase the 14-year-olds. Jayna’s haunting performance of “Make It Rain” had Laura’s opera rendition of “The Prayer” had the judges absolutely raving, and had me completely blown away with their ability to perform with such poise. Lori also hit the stage that night, and I will admit that her comedy routine didn’t have me laughing the same way she has in the past. But there’s still a similar charm to a 14-year-old writing her own jokes and slamming Donald Trump.
In addition to the talent that all of the teens have, most of them also have some sort of inspiring story — which isn’t all that common for someone who has only been alive for 14 years. Jayna revealed that she and her mom were homeless before moving in with her grandma, Calysta is a cancer survivor, and Kadie Lynn was adopted by an older couple who helped make her dream a reality. And while it seems the other four haven’t been through a life-changing hardship yet, they’ve all taught themselves their talent, whether it’s playing ukulele (Grace), hitting ridiculous notes (Laura), coming up with witty jokes (Lori), or shooting a bow and arrow with their feet (Sofie). Yeah…I certainly wasn’t doing any of that when I was 14.
Of course, it’s going to come down to who America likes most, and there’s still several mind-blowing acts left who will give the talented teens a run for their money. But with the fight they’ve put up so far, it’s definitely not impossible for one of the teens to take it all the way. And whether a teen wins the million or not, something tells me all seven of these girls won’t be disappearing anytime soon.
