So generous! Retired basketball star Michael Jordan is giving a whopping $2 million to two organizations that strive to bring peace to communities. Keep reading to hear straight from Michael why he is to putting his money to work to stop the bloodshed in the streets.
“As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers,” Michael Jordan, 53, shares in a letter to The Undefeated.
The NBA star and Nike shoe icon explains who is receiving the big donations, “I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.” Incredible, what a great guy!
The former Chicago Bulls shooting guard shares why he chose the particular organizations, “The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization, will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement.”
Social injustice and violent crimes are issues close to Michael’s heart. His father James R. Jordan Sr. was tragically shot and killed in North Carolina, on July 23, 1993 before his car was stolen. Michael seems to also be effected by the several high-profile killings across the country over the last several months. From the 5 officers shot in Dallas by a sniper, to the police killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, Michael has many reasons to want to use his finances to help change the world for the better. Bravo Michael, and thank you for your generosity!
