This is the best news ever! Rihanna is set to play the iconic role of Marion Crane in the fifth and final season of ‘Bates Motel,’ the show’s panel announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 22. Get all the horrifically good details here!
The role was initially played by the original scream queen, Janet Leigh, in the 1960 Psycho movie, so this is very exciting. Plus, it’s Rihanna‘s very first TV role!
“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate,” Bates Motel executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin said in a statement released after the panel.
At this time, it’s unclear if Rihanna will reenact that famous shower scene from Alfred Hitchock‘s classic film.“We will be colliding with certain events in the narrative of the film,” Carlton said, “but it would be boring to just recreate Psycho.”

Also announced at the panel on Friday was the fact that season five of Bates Motel will be the series’ last, however, that was always the vision for Carlton and co-creator/showrunner Kerry Ehrin. Furthermore, Vera Farmiga will executive produce and return in her role as “Norma” despite dying in the final episodes of season four. Max Thieriot will make his directorial debut and Nestor Carbonell will also direct. Lastly, Freddie Highmore will co-write an episode, HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site Deadline reports. These are all very exciting details and we can’t wait to watch Season 5 unfold!
