Rupert Murdoch is officially taking over Fox News after Roger Ailes resigned following accusations of sexual harassment by Gretchen Carlson and multiple other women. Don’t know much about Rupert? Not to worry, we’ve put together a list of the top 5 things you should know about the media mogul!
Rupert Murdoch, 85, the co-chairman of Fox News’ parent company 21st Century Fox, is stepping in for Roger Aisles, 76, after the former CEO decided to walk away from his post following a severe sexual harassment lawsuit from Gretchen Carlson, 50, a longtime Fox News anchor. Megyn Kelly, 45, also came forward with allegations against Roger, according to NewYorkMag.com, saying that he was inappropriate with her nearly a decade ago. Now, Rupert is facing the reality of replacing his long-time ally Roger, with the hopes of rebuilding the network’s tarnished image. Here’s a few interesting tid-bits about the media mogul who is now the acting CEO of Fox News.
1.) Rupert Murdoch is super wealthy and powerful
He’s the Executive Chairman of News Corporation, Executive Co-Chairman of 21st Century Fox, and has recently furthered his impressive resume with his new title: CEO of Fox News. Not only that but his net worth was estimated to be $11.7 billion. Yowza!
2.) He had to take risks in order to achieve his dreams.
Rupert risked his Australian citizenship in 1981, to purchase the British publication The Times, and as a result became a naturalized United States Citizen. By 1985, he satisfied the legal requirement to have U.S. television ownership rights, which helped kick-start his long running media career.
3.) Rupert’s network continued to expand by making smart decisions.
He was always striving to be better, acquiring businesses like 20th Century Fox, Harper Collins and the Wall Street Journal. By 2000, he had a net worth of $5 billion and owned over 800 companies in over 50 countries.
4.) Despite Roger’s controversial departure, Rupert released an amicable statement about the former CEO.
He wrote that although Roger no longer shares his vision of an incredible network and organization, he “has made a remarkable contribution to our company and our country.” Rupert will not only take supervision of Fox News, but also the Fox Business Network as it’s interim chairman and chief executive, according to our sister site Variety.
5.) Now, Rupert’s kids follow his passions and work with him in the news business.
His sons, Lachlan and James, 21CF’s co-Executive Chairman, and CEO plan to rebuild the tarnished image of the network, saying they will “continue [their] commitment to maintaining a work environment based on trust and respect.” Another interesting fact: Rupert married Mick Jagger‘s ex wife Jerry Hall on March 4, 2016.
