Good riddance! Roger Ailes has resigned from Fox News following former host Gretchen Carlson’s sexual harassment lawsuit and claims made by Megyn Kelly against Ailes. Rupert Murdoch will step in as the interim chairman and chief executive.
Roger Ailes has officially been voted off the island. He’s stepping down from Fox in every capacity, according to an official statement from 21st Century Fox. Here are the highlights:
Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, and Chairman of Fox Television Stations, has resigned from his role effective immediately.
Rupert Murdoch will assume the role of Chairman and acting CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.
Rupert Murdoch, who is currently the co-Executive Chairman of 21st Century Fox, said in the statement that Ailes once shared his vision of an incredible network and organization, and “has made a remarkable contribution to our company and our country”. Yes, well, Ailes didn’t do so well in the end, there.
Murdoch’s sons, Lachlan and James, 21CF’s co-Executive Chairman, and CEO, respectively, said that following the oust of Ailes, they will “continue [their] commitment to maintaining a work environment based on trust and respect”. You know, because “trust” and “respect” are two words synonymous with “Fox News”.
Ailes’ downfall comes on the heels of former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson‘s sexual harassment lawsuit against him, which she filed in July, and current host Megyn Kelly‘s allegations that Ailes “made unwanted sexual advances toward her about ten years ago”, as New York magazine has reported. After conducting an investigation of him, executives at Fox then gave Ailes an ultimatum: resign, or be fired. Now we wait and see who will be named the new CEO of the network.
