Is Idris saying no to Bond? Well, the rumors have been swirling for years that he’ll be the first African American James Bond — but as far as he knows, it’s not the right role for him. And his reasoning behind that might just surprise you. Watch his new interview from ‘Good Morning America!’
“It is the wildest rumor in the world,” Idris Elba told Michael Strahan on Good Morning America on July 21 while promoting Star Trek. “I keep saying if it were to happen it would be the will of a nation because there hasn’t been any talks between me and the studio about any of that… but everywhere I go people want that to happen, so.” Well, duh!
The 43-year-old actor also confessed that it’s not really something he’d pursue. Wait, what?! “If I’m really honest man, I think I’m too old for that man, running around in cars and ladies and martinis, who wants to do that? Sounds terrible,” he said laughing — but seemed actually serious, which surprised us (and Michael Strahan)! He made a face and said, “If you don’t want it, I’ll take it!”
Of course, it’s no secret that Idris cam act and very well — but not everyone thinks he should be bond.
“James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. [The character] was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was,” Rush Limbaugh said in 2014, according to The Guardian. “But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Britain, rather than a white from Scotland. But that’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to probably point this out.”
Well, why would you say it then? However, it seems to be a moot point at this point.
