The WWE is headed for a legal smackdown because more than 50 former superstars are suing the company! Marty Jannetty, Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka and others claim they developed severe brain damage from wrestling for WWE — and they want retribution!
King Kong Bundy, 58, The Berserker, 56, and Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka, 73, used to tangle in the middle of the ring, but now they’re taking their battle to the courtroom. They are part of the group of 50-plus wrestlers who filed a class action lawsuit against the WWE on July 18, according to The New York Post.
The wrestlers claim that due to the multiple head traumas they endured while wrestling for the WWE (the WWF in the 1980s and early 90s), they’re now suffering with long-term brain damage and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. The symptoms include headaches, dizziness and memory loss.
The wrestlers – many of which are WWE Hall of Famers — accuse their former company of concealing the risks of developing CTE. The lawsuit also claims that the WWE and Vince McMahon, 70 intentionally classify wrestlers as “independent contractors,” instead of employees, as a way to get out of worker protection laws. The wrestlers are looking for compensatory and punitive damages, as well as improved medical monitoring.
The “WWE placed corporate gain over its wrestlers’ health, safety and financial security,” the complaint said. Among those participating in the lawsuit are Road Warrior Animal (Joseph Laurinaitis, 56), Paul “Mr. Wonderful” Orndorff, 66, Ax and Smash (aka Bill Eadie, 68, and Barry Darsow, 56), Marty Jannetty, 56, Kamala (Jim Harris, 66) and twin referees, Earl and Dave Hebner, 67.
The WWE is ready for this (legal) fight. The company slammed this lawsuit in a statement to HollywoodLife.com, calling it “another ridiculous attempt by the same attorney who has previously filed class action lawsuits against WWE, both of which have been dismissed. A federal judge has already found that this lawyer made patently false allegations about WWE, and this is more of the same. We’re confident this lawsuit will suffer the same fate as his prior attempts and be dismissed.”
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Will this lawsuit get dismissed or will the WWE be pinned for the legal 3-count?
